What is the difference?

Today, it seems that the PRE horse (Pura Raza Española) is more widely known among horse enthusiasts in Scandinavia than the Lusitano. There could be many reasons for this, but it doesn’t change the fact that there are differences between the two breeds, and at LQ, we aim to shed light on these differences.

Genetically, PSL (Puro Sangue Lusitano) and PRE are very close to identical, though there is more Sorraia DNA detected in the Lusitano. However, the key difference between the two lies in breeding and selection methods.

The Lusitano has been bred and selected for functionality. Its temperament and physical conformation have been honed for work in the mountains, in the bullfighting ring, and for driving. These qualities have taken precedence over other aspects, such as appearance—characteristics like a long mane or color were secondary considerations.

The physical build of the PRE can also be noticeably different. Some PRE horses are known for having a very large neck, a more curved or hollow back, and forelegs that swing and lift very high.

Some people even claim that the Lusitano is more "hot-headed" than the PRE, with one saying, "With a PRE you go to church; with a PSL you go to work." Based on personal experience, the Lusitano is indeed spirited, but in a controllable and willing way.
